Correct design is necessary when it comes to designing the correct pipeline to accommodate high volumes of water. It is still found that engineers forget the all important factor of "water hammer". The volume of water in the rising main and the distance of pumping through the pipeline can cause serious damage to the pump if not designed correctly. Tons of water hit the pump during a power failure or when the pump is switched off.
This causes the weakest point to fail and possibly the pump will break away from the pipeline, resulting in the pump to be fished. Numerous mines and farmers have experienced this occurrence with expensive consequences.
